Almost half of the employees are hearing impaired at our Windhoek Factory, with a further eight of the workforce wheelchair bound. Sign language interpreters and diamond masters assist in developing the skills and opportunities of our brightest gems.

My name is Maria Shitaleni
…at home they called me Ndapana. I was born on the 14th March 1984 at Okaleke village in Omusati village. After completing Grade 12 in November 2001, there was no money to study further, so I headed to Windhock in search of work. In June 2008 I got a job as a cleaner in Andre Messika’s diamond cutting facility, under the leadership of our director Marc Friedman. Marc goes on to say…
“Maria started with us in 2008, we quickly noticed her enthusiasm to learn. As soon as she would finish her cleaning she always asked to sit and watch staff do their jobs, mainly on computers as this interested her. She then got a promotion to do camera surveillance in the factory.
But this was just a stepping stone to her next promotion where she became one of the factory diamond stock controllers. She excelled at this role and became a Senior Stock Controller. This led to her promotion in 2016 to Diamond Stock Control Manager. A real-life success story, she’s now responsible for our diamond stock control, safe-keeping, import and export of polished and rough diamonds in with the Kimberley Process, in addition to being the main liaison between the Government and ourselves in respect of compliance under the Namibian Diamond Act.”
“Whenever I see a diamond shine on my desk, I also feel like I’m shining like a diamond”, Maria proudly laments. “I love diamonds and am used to how they feel whenever I touch them. I appreciate having my bosses and their constant support as we grow together. They inspire me to learn from my mistakes and push my limits which is why I’m forever grateful for their Leadership
